Counting - 1st Grade 

Lesson plan #1...

 1st grade counting lesson plan ...(please print out)

Goal
Have children or child recognize the digits 1-10.  Zero is not a difficult concept to grasp but it will be left to 1st grade counting lesson plan #2.  

Basics

What is base 10 math?
Answer: Numbers 0-9 (or 1-10).

What are the order that the first 10 numbers come in?
Answer: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

Print out for each math student

1  A
2  AB
3  ABC
4  ABCD
5  ABCDE
6  ABCDEF
7  ABCDEFG
8  ABCDEFGH
9  ABCDEFGHI
10 ABCDEFGHIJ


Have children associate each letter of the alphabet with a finger.

Ideas:

  • Write the number AND the letter on a bandaid and wrap each one around a finger.
  • Put the number and the letter on household or classroom objects such as "A" AND "1" on a single apple, "2" AND "B" on two balls, etc.
