What my 1st Grader needs to know...

 1st grade requirements...(please print out)

    Definition

General concepts and problem solving should fall into these five categories...

  • Numerical concepts and solving basic mathematical problems.
  • Demonstrate basic Geometric concepts...Geometry begins!
  • Measurement.
  • Algebra basics.
  • Data collection and analysis (basic Probability theory).

...and you thought your 1st grader was going to be learning "simple math".

    Number concepts

  1. Read and write numbers from 0 - 99.
  2. Value comparisons (greater than, less than, and equal to).
  3. Ordering of numbers.
  4. Money value comparison (make use of coins).
  5. Basic addition and subtraction (use numbers 0-10).
  6. Basic problem solving.  Should be able to show problem solving and chain of reasoning using simple objects or pictures.

   Geometric concepts

  1. Learn, categorize, and name 2nd and 3rd dimensional shapes (flat and 3D objects).
  2. Provide written and verbal evidence of geometrical object categorization.  The chain of logic MUST be demonstrated proficiently and repeatedly.

   Measurement concepts

  1. Estimate and exactly measure objects.  (Stay away from standard units of measurement!)
  2. Use problem solving and addition/subtraction concepts together on written and verbal measurement problems.
  3. Time.  Use "hand clocks" with the aid of digital clocks to understand the concept of time in half hour increments.

   Algebraic concepts

  1. Use graphs and hand tools/toys ("manipulatives") to with patterns up to 4 objects (i.e. "ABCD")
  2. Demonstrate use of repeating patterns in problem solving.

   Data collection and Analysis

  1. Classify information into groups.
  2. Use graphs and pictures to demonstrate knowledge of "grouping" or classification.
  3. Record experiment results and group the data together.  (Good crossover with basic science)
