What my 2nd Grader needs to know...

 2nd grade requirements...(please print out)

    Definition

General concepts and problem solving should fall into these five categories...

  • Number concepts and solving basic mathematical problems.
  • Geometric concepts.
  • Measurement.
  • Algebra basics.
  • Data collection and analysis (basic Probability theory).

...and you thought your 1st grader was going to be learning "simple math".

    Numbers

  1. Read and write numbers from 0 - 999.
  2. Value comparisons (greater than, less than, and equal to...focus on "hundreds").
  3. Ordering of numbers (concept of "hundreds").
  4. Money concept...making "change" from a dollar (addition/subtraction lead in).
  5. Basic addition and subtraction (use numbers 0-20).
  6. Mentally add and subtract number 0-10 (memorization is NOT a bad thing).
  7. Basic problem solving.  Focus on patterns in basic problem solving such as "guestimation".

   Geometric concepts

  1. Learn, categorize, and name 2nd and 3rd dimensional shapes (flat and 3D objects...cont. from 1st grade).
  2. Angle concepts... 90, 180, 270, 360 degrees...integrate with telling time.
  3. Concept of symmetry (sameness).
  4. Concept of asymmetry (difference).
  5. Provide written and verbal evidence of geometrical object categorization.

   Measurement concepts

  1. Learn "inches" and "foot".  Measure (add/subtract) 1-12 inches or less than one foot.
  2. Learn "centimeters".  Measure (add/subtract) 1-100 centimeters or less than one meter.
  3. Learn weight and the concept of "pound" and "kilogram".  Practice weighing items.
  4. Relate "less than", "greater than", "equal to" when weighing items.
  5. Use problem solving and addition/subtraction concepts together on written and verbal measurement problems.
  6. Time.  Use a "hand-clock" to teach 15 minute increments and reinforce #2 in Geometric concepts.
  7. Tell time within 5 minutes.  Tie in with "guestimation"..."to the nearest 5 minutes".

   Algebraic concepts

  1. Use graphs to show grouping (i.e. measurement over time).
  2. Introduce the concept of "linear increase"...and graph. (i.e. 1+1, 1+2, 1+3, etc.)
  3. Demonstrate use of repeating patterns in problem solving.

   Data collection and Analysis

  1. Introduce grouping with Venn diagrams. (only in A, only in B, in both A and B, in neither A or B)
  2. Introduction to statistics. (50-50 chance...keep it simple...flip a quarter)
  3. Use odd and even number sided dice to demonstrate (1 in 5, 1 in 6, etc.)
  4. Record experiment results and group the data together using graphs.  (Good crossover with basic science)
