Measurement and Distance
for Kindergartners

Measurement and Distance

  • Measurement UNITS
  • Distance as LENGTH

Units of Measurement

Teaching units of measurement to Kindergartners should be kept simple and abstract.

  1. A simple item to use is "paper clips".
  2. How many paper clips is my desk?
  3. How many paper clips is a book?

Length as Distance

Distance can easily be taught as "how far away an item is".  The main concept to teach is that distance is "relative" to where you start and end.

  1. Have child use their feet as UNITS.
  2. How many feet is it to the chalkboard from your desk?
  3. How many feet is it to the door?

Note: In this lesson you may need to help children count.  You may reinforce number skills by writing the number on the board to help children count or by handing them number flash cards as they walk.
