Proficiency in: Reteaching independent investigation (to support transitional movement). New skill in developing and reproducing continuing patterns by listening and observing. Supports relating patterning imaginatively in many varied ways.
Materials needed: math manipulative box ( See: Math Manipulatives ), recorded tape or CD and CD player.
Activity: Together, listen to the sound and try to reproduce the pattern made.
Duration: Depending on the student's eagerness and the variety of clapping and foot stamping sounds being heard this lesson is usually between five to fifteen minutes long. This experience should be practiced for a minimum of five school days, (Monday through Friday). Prepare for some reteaching time on the following Monday and Tuesday before transitioning into more patterning experiences.
Model of teaching approach: The parent first listens to the pattern on the tape and models the sound for the child. The child repeats the movement back to the parent.
Extended teaching approach: When the child feels confident about replicating the pattern sounds extend this by adding body movement, i.e. turning around, turning from side to side (swaying), or moving up and down. Let me give you an example, I hear a pattern of finger snap, snap, snap, followed by, clap, clap, and ending with stamp, stamp, stamp. To extend this motion maybe I would snap and simultaneously lean to the right on the next snap I would lean left and the last snap lean right. The claps would be one clap turn back and on the second clap turn front again. The foot stamping could then become hop, hop, hop. The greater variety of rhythmic sounds addresses the more opportunity to vary them.
