Exploring Lines - Page 4 (6th grade, review for 7th grade)

Line property 4:  if two lines are parallel (notation: L1 || L2), then from a given point on one line there exists a shortest line segment whose other endpoint lies on the second line. The length of this line segment is the distance d between L1 and L2. Since these are parallel lines this distance does not vary along these lines. These segments are perpendiculars to these lines (notation S ⊥ L1). The segment S is also said to be othogonal to the parallel lines.

Another view is: given a line L and distance d, there exists exactly two lines, one on each side of L, at the distance d from L.
