Why This Site

Why another (free) Math Web Site?

First and foremost, I created this site for the fun of it.  Yes, Mathematics is fun for me, in fact, it is relaxing to me.

The more information on Mathematics, (and it should all be free)the more available it is to everyone.  A single perspective does not fit all;  we all, after all, learn in our own ways.

My goal is to cover all of Mathematics from Kindergarten through High School.    The topic pages can be used as lesson presentations.    Even though this site is targeted for the home schoolers, it has been use as a reference for students through college.  If I help only one person than I've achieved my goals.

The topic guide is derived from all state standards.  This quickly got in the way of writing the pages themselves.   At some point I will link the standards to pages in this site.

I want the topics to be accessible to parents of home schoolers. This site is free.  It should also be a resource to math teachers and their students in all school districts.  My references are various high school texts, college texts, and various mathematics history books, as well as myself.

For the homeschooler: the Saxon Mathematics series are the best texts I've seen in the last 51 years when it comes to an incremental approach to learning Mathematics.  I cannot speak enough how great this series is.  The approach taken in this series is the same approach I used when I was an officer in the Nuclear Navy teaching Mathematics at the Naval Nuclear Power School, and it worked.    Saxon has a cool website too.

There is material on k12math.com that you would be hard pressed finding anywhere else.  The advanced section in the Conic Sections topic contains derivations of conic section equations, in particular, the vertex equation that describes all of them in terms of eccentricity.  There's more to conic sections than what meets the eyes and that's not taught in any classroom at any level.

In all sections that require algebra, I made sure EVERY step is shown along with a short explanation for each step. If you want to know how to do a problem, this site will explain every detail to you.

Unfortunately, there will be errors on this site, as I have no reviewer to check my work. But I do take great pains to ensure accuracy.  Any mistake can have a disastrous effect.  I routinely work through a page 5 or more times over 5 or more days to verify every step prior to posting it.

So who am I?  Well many years ago I received a BS in Applied Mathematics, taught for the Navy as mentioned earlier, left the Navy and received a MS in Computer Science.  At that point I worked for the mining industry, a telecom company, a satellite provider and I managed to teach a few years at a state college.  I currently work for a middeware (software) provider for satellite and cable providers.  Having said all this, my first love is Mathematics, and as I stated earlier, if I can help just one person with this site it has been worthwhile.

Every page should have a Topic Index link in the upper left corner and at the bottom of the page.   Use this link to navigate to the topic of interest to you.

One last thing, I apologize for the google ads and for the rather terse appearance of the pages. For the first, the ads pay for the site, and for the second I have plans to improve the appearance.
